Hollywood beauty Marilyn Monroe had her fair share of lovers, none of them stuck around long. She was divorced three times before dying of an overdose at age 36 in 1962.

Shortly after the moniker became her real name and she became a Hollywood icon, a young Norma Jean Baker married her neighbor James Dougherty at the tender age of 16.

Dougherty was sent on an overseas assignment in 1944 and returned to Los Angeles two years later to find Monroe embarking on a modeling career. Monroe decided to follow her dreams of becoming an actress and Dougherty wasn't part of them.

"My marriage didn't make me sad, but it didn't make me happy either," Monroe said. "My husband and I hardly spoke to each other. This wasn't because we were angry. We had nothing to say. I was dying of boredom."

Dougherty eventually became a Los Angeles police detective. In later life, it was reported that Dougherty's second wife refused to let him see films in which Marilyn Monroe was a star.
