Bejeweled Skeletons Unearthed from the Catacombs of Rome

By | August 9, 2017

The skeletons were originally unearthed in 1578 in catacombs beneath Rome. They were then given to churches across Europe as replacement for the Saint relics they have lost during the Reformation. The receiving churches were the ones who spent years adorning the revered skeletons with jewels and golden clothing. Even the eye sockets and teeth were filled with jewels and finery.

Yet when the Enlightenment came around, the churches became a little embarrassed for the amount of money and excess wealth the skeletons represented that's why they were hidden away and buried.
