Photographer Uses Camera Equipment Made in The 1800s To Take Eerily Beautiful Portraits

A Nashville-based contemporary photographer, named Giles Clement, uses a camera equipment made in the 1800s and is able to create eerily beautiful portraits with it.

“My tintype images are created using equipment made more than 160 years ago,” writes the photographer on his website. “from an era when cameras were made by craftsmen in small shops and lenses were designed using slide rules, experience and feel. The inherent flaws of these instruments lend themselves perfectly to my view of a beautifully imperfect world.”

Clement utilizes both tintype (a photo taken as a positive on a thin tin plate) and ambrotype (a primal type of photograph created by placing a glass negative against a dark background), two of the popular photography techniques during 1850s and 1860s. As shown from the pictures below, the end result is amazing -- both haunting and arresting. (Check out more of Giles Clement's photos here.)
