Marijuana may soon be a Schedule III drug: What will change?

The Justice Department initiated a significant move towards reclassifying marijuana to a lower level of danger.

While the process is still pending finalization, the proposal aims to shift marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III classification.

Under the Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) categorization system, drugs are classified into five categories using Roman numerals based on their potential for abuse. Schedule I drugs, including marijuana, heroin, LSD, and ecstasy, are deemed to have the highest risk of dependency and lack accepted medical uses.
