These Vintage Photos of San Francisco Hippies Reveal the Carefree Lifestyle of Youths in the 1960s - 1970s

Known for its tolerance and multiculturalism, outcasts and the socially marginalized flocked to San Franciso on the cusp of the 1970s. An eclectic community was formed. This series of vintage photos, taken by photographer William Gedney in 1966-67 captures the spirit of the streets at the time – from the peaceful hippies to the wild radicals.
