Animal Crackers became an instant hit with children when they were first introduced in 1902. The drawings on the box alone were enough to to sell the cookies.

In the 1935 film Curly Top, when Shirley Temple sang about putting them in her soup, a lot of parents at the time wrote to complain that their children started idumping the crackers in their soup, thereby ruining a perfectly good meal. Shirley's parents were quick to say that, in real life, Shirley didn't really put animal crackers in her soup as they were just too sweet. Rather she ate them afterwards.
