Amendments to the U.S. Constitution

Since the Constitution was put into operation on March 4, 1789, 33 amendments to the United States Constitution have been proposed by the U.S. Congress and sent to the states for ratification. Twenty-seven have been ratified by the requisite number of states, and have since become part of the Constitution.
